During the COVID-19 pandemic, people were doing their part to help reduce the spread of the virus by quarantining at home. This meant that people started to catch up or start new hobbies as time seemed to slow down. The resolution for my Major Project is centred on quarantine hobbies and sustainable growing. After heavy research, I designed an app called Herbalist that lets users grow and produce their own personalised teas at home.

The goal of Herbalist is to attract those who love gardening and tea in general as well as those who never thought they would get into planting or producing herbal teas at home. Ultimately, users can pick and choose what herbs they prefer to grow, and Herbalist will send their personalised box to their doors. The box contains essential components to grow the herbs, including locally sourced terracotta pots and soil.  Users can then track the growth of the herbs through the Herbalist app and explore the ‘HerbFam’ forum which is a space where users can share their tea growing journey.

Herbalist can be enjoyed by anyone, including children, as it can educate them about the importance of sustainable growing and sourcing own produce which can also be an entertaining activity. Not only can Herbalist users grow and produce tea but can also add their homemade herbs into their cooking – hence encouraging users to live more greener and healthier in the long term.
